October saw the Yorkshire and Humberside Junior and Youth
Series draw to a close. For the first time children and youths in Yorkshire
and Humberside have had the chance to compete to become the highest placed
finisher in their age category. Over the past six months competitors aged
between eight and sixteen have participated in Triathlons (Swim-Bike- Runs)
and Aquathlons (Swim-Runs), many for he first time. To qualify for the series
each competitor had to compete in three of the six events that took place.
Race results also formed the basis
from which the Regional Team was selected to compete against other regions
from England, Wales and Scotland. For the last event of the series
competitors returned to Leeds Grammar School, which had hosted the first event
in the series several months earlier. Around 80 people aged from eight to 23
were there on the day to take part. With many of the regional series results
depending upon performances in the Aquathlon, the competition to be crowned
regional winner added something extra to the race atmosphere on the day. In
the eight year old Tristart category achievement awards went to Isabelle
Dewar-Fowler and Mackenzie Mellor who were both from Holmfirth Harriers.
Angus Dewar Fowler (Holmfirth Harriers) came first in the Tristar 1 (9 to 10
years) category. In the Tristar 2 (11-12 years), female category, Athena
Mellor (Holmfirth Harriers) was placed first and Alex Clay (North Yorkshire
Police Tri) second. In the Tristar 2, males Jamie Martin (Harrogate District
Swimming Club) came first and Jamie Bowron second. In the Tristar 3 (13 to 14
year old), female category, Lois Rosindale was first and Victoria Dewar-Fowler
(Holmfirth Harriers) second. In the male youths aged 15 to 16 Alistair
Brownlee (Triangle Racing Team) came first, Dom Brook (Sheffield Tri) second,
and James Smith (Sheffield Tri) third. Certificates and trophies were
presented after the event by Michael Burch, Regional Development Officer for
Yorkshire and Humberside, Mick Brook, the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional
Committee Chair and Sean Palmer the Yorkshire and Humberside Junior Series
Coordinator.
