Young Yorkshire Talent On Show In Devon

Three  Holmfirth Harrier juniors completed their first aquathlon of the season whilst on holiday in Devon last week.  The weather conditions in Tavistock on Sunday 3rd April being cold with constant drizzle. This is the fourth year that the Kelly College series has been run and attracted almost 100 competitors. With such a high number of athletes competition was going to be tough and a true test of our Yorkshire athletes’ character.

New to our trio were the mass starts in a four lane pool which led to some interesting jockeying for position especially in the first two lengths of the swim.

First to compete in her first season as a Tristar 1 was Isobel Dewar-Fowler in a field of 7.  She emerged from her 150m swim in joint second place timed at 2.39.  She valiantly tried to make up the 10 second deficit on the leader without success during the 1500m run. In the later stages though the leader increased her lead to win in a time of 9.29 with Isobel taking second place in a time of 9.53 with a 13 second margin over the third placed girl.

Brother Angus competed next, again in his first season as a Tristar 2, but in a large field of 21.  With a time of 4.19 for the 250m swim he left the pool in 12th place almost a whole minute down on the leader.  The leaders continued to outpace him during the 2km run with the winning time being 11.41. Angus did make up three places though, finishing 9th with a time of 12.54.

The last of the trio to compete was eldest sister Victoria in the Tristar 3 event who exited the pool after her 400m swim in first place in 5.11. She fought valiantly to hold onto this lead for the first 2000m with the eventual winner’s running pedigree showing through in the last km to finish in 18.09. Victoria hung onto second place out of 16 in a time of 18.35
